Some 75% of UK adults have a driving licence, which is another way of saying that there are a lot of drivers on the roads. But the percentage of people who genuinely enjoy driving? That’s probably a lot lower. You only need to take a look at the faces of people driving during rush hour to see that many people would rather be anywhere else.
If you find yourself in that bracket, then it’s worth working to improve your relationship with driving. By taking a few steps, you can put the fun back into being behind the wheel. And it's a good idea to do so — after all, unless you’re in a position to give up driving for good, then it’s something you’ll have to do on a regular basis anyway, so you may as well enjoy it!
Pick a New Route
The problem is not always that drivers hate being in the car. It’s that they hate where they’re driving — work — and the route they’re taking to get there. If you’re doing the same old journey every day, then it’s inevitable that you’ll eventually begin to dislike driving.
If possible, look at picking a new route to the office. It’s usually better to take a route that you genuinely enjoy, even if it takes you 10-15 minutes longer.
Get a New Car
Think you hate driving? You might just dislike your car. It’s not fun to drive a vehicle that is past its best, or which is beginning to have performance issues. Also, some cars just aren’t fun to drive even when they’re brand new! If your vehicle isn’t inspiring fun, then consider upgrading your vehicle. You can usually get a quality, fun vehicle for a decent price, especially if you look at the used car market; you’ll find it much more fun to drive if you find a used MG for sale, or if you pick up a classic Mercedes. When you have a vehicle you genuinely want to drive, you’ll have no problem getting behind the wheel, even if you’re just going to the supermarket.
Make Journeys Fun
Driving used to be a pretty straightforward experience. But today’s vehicles are capable of a level of entertainment that is unparalleled. With little more than your smartphone, you can listen to the best albums of all time, the world’s best podcasts, and top-selling audiobooks. You’ll find that your drive to work is much more enjoyable if you’re sucked into a fascinating story.
See It As a Luxury
Finally, one handy way to make driving more fun is to change how you view it. If you view driving as a luxury that you get to do, rather than have to do, then you’ll enjoy being behind the wheel much more. And if you struggle to change how you see it, then try taking public transportation for a week or two. We’re pretty confident that you’ll be running back to your car after you’ve experienced another rush hour delay that has you home late!
