If you are looking for a spooktacular Halloween event in Yorkshire that bridges the gap between gentle trick-or-treating and hardcore horror haunts, Once Upon a Nightmare at Lotherton Hall is an absolute winner.
I took my two lads (aged 11 and almost 13) along with two of their mates to check out this year's 3rd installment produced by Breeze. The official premise is "fairy tales gone wrong" a dark twist on classic fables brought to life in the atmospheric grounds and woodlands of Lotherton Hall.
If you are wondering whether this is the right scare attraction for your tweens, teens, or easily spooked family members, here is our complete experience along with all the essential practical details, pricing, transport guides, and insider tips you need before booking!
What Is the Vibe and Who Is It For?
Q: Is Once Upon a Nightmare actually scary, or is it family-friendly?
A: It hits the sweet spot perfectly! The event blends a dark, horror-tinged, spooky aesthetic with a twisted fairy-tale theme. It is definitely a scare experience—so we would skip it for under 9s or children who really dislike jump scares. However, it is not gory or overly intense. The scares rely on eerie lighting, ambient soundscapes, atmospheric smoke, and live actors leaping out from the shadows.
Because there’s no gore, it makes an ideal first scare attraction for older kids, tweens, teens, and families looking to test the waters of Halloween scare trails.
Q: Do you walk through alone or in groups?
A: You enter the trail in controlled groups of approximately 8 people, so you are never isolated in the dark. You stroll through the set path at your own leisure while taking in the live actors and atmospheric sets.
Q: How are the actors, and what were your favorite scares?
A: The scare actors are fantastic—immersive, interactive, and improving every single year! The golden rule is simple: you do not touch the actors, and they will not touch you. They know exactly how to play to the crowd, playful with the kids while still delivering great jump scares.
Our personal favorites this year included:
- The Clowns in the Maze: Highly interactive with a totally different style of scare compared to the rest of the trail.
- The Three Little Pigs in the Woods: Absolutely brilliant—one was waiting on the path while another chased our group through the trees!
- The Big Bad Wolf: Located near the end of the trail, this character was huge, looked incredible, and was super interactive and playful with the lads.
Queue Times, Pacing & Insider Tips
Q: How does queueing work, and when should we arrive?
A: When booking your tickets, you select a specific entry time slot (slots run between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM). We recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes before your slot time.
Different time slots have designated queue lines. For example, we went for the 6:30 PM slot, arrived around 6:15 PM, and there were only about six groups ahead of us in our specific queue line. The earlier you get into your time slot's queue, the quicker you will be let onto the trail.
Q: How is the crowd pacing along the trail?
A: Having been to scare events all over the UK, one thing I really give Lotherton Hall credit for is crowd management. At times, the trail can get slightly backlogged, but instead of rushing you through or ruining the experience, the staff actively hold groups back for a few moments. This ensures every group gets the full scare experience and that actors are resetting into position before you enter each zone.
Q: What should we wear and bring with us?
- Footwear: While the main paths are generally clear, you will step off onto grassed areas and woodland terrain. It wasn't overly muddy on our visit, but wearing sturdy walking boots or trainers is definitely advisable. Leave heels or open shoes at home!
- Clothing: It's an outdoor event in late October, so dress warmly in layers with waterproof coats.
- Lighting: Certain stretches of the woodland path are extremely dark and hard to see. We highly recommend bringing a small torch or keeping your phone light handy!
- Facilities: There are free portaloos located right at the side of the main queue area before you enter.
