Have a look below at three things every car owner should make sure they know:

You Must Be Insured

It is a legal requirement to make sure you have car insurance. There are three main types of cover which include:

  • Fully Comprehensive - Where it covers you for costs related to both your vehicle and any vehicle include in an accident, fire and theft.
  • Third-Party, Fire and Theft- Where it covers you for cost related to damages to other vehicles caused by you in an accident, fire and theft.
  • Fire and Theft- Where you’re cover for fire and theft only.

The most popular but often the most expensive is fully comprehensive insurance. When looking for insurance it’s important to assess your needs. It’s best to use reputable sites such as More Than Car Insurance who offer a range of different policies based on your needs.

You Need To Make Sure Your Prepared For The Unexpected

No, you don’t need to have a survival kit packed away in your car but you do need to be prepared for things such as long traffic jams, flat tyres and breakdowns. All of which are normally unexpected but often unavoidable. It’s a good idea to make sure you’re fully prepared for these situations by thinking about some of these areas:

  • Emergency Pack - Include items such as water, a torch and blanket just in case you break down in the cold or need to change a tyre in the dark.
  • Tyres- You need to make sure you’re tyre are in good condition, you have either a replacement tyre or temporary tyre filler(depending on the age of your car), a jack, your wheel locking bolt and a ratchet.
  • Jumper Cables- No one ever expects to break down or their battery to go flat however it can happen time to time, it’s a good idea to have jumper cables in your car for those just in case moments.

You Need To Check Your Car Before Long Journeys

Your car may be running like clockwork and seem like it has no problems with you running it around on your daily commute or to visit family or friends on a weekend but when it comes to a long-distance journey there are certain things you should double-check before you go. You’re at higher risk on a long journey and it can be even more of an inconvenience. Some things to check include:

  • Your Tyres- They need to have a decent amount of tread and be at the correct pressure.
  • Your Oil levels- Always check using the dip stick and top up if you need to.
  • Your Water and Coolant- Again you need to make sure these are at the correct levels.
  • Break Down Cover- It’s a good idea to make sure you have breakdown cover with the right level of cover before a long journey.

These three areas are important for every car owner. Do you have others that should be included? Please share them in the comments below.
