Ditching The Dummy - Progress Update

For those of you that don't know already we made the decision to take-away Ted's dummy this week We felt that it was the right time to do it as he is now 22 months old. He loves his dummy so we did think long and hard about the repercussions of taking it away from him. He particularly loved having his dummy on a night before he went to bed and during the night.

He is the old enough to ask for it and he is very aware of his surroundings so we knew when we started that he would ask for his dummy again and again. We did a lot of reading online to find out how other coped with the potential battle of removing a dummy from an established routine.

We felt that going cold turkey was one of the only options with Ted. Many people recommended using a dummy fairy as a decoy but we knew that if he was given presents he would ask for them every night and we didn't want to replace one habit with another more expensive one.

So far it has been going really well, it is only on the rare occasion that he has asked for it. We found that keeping him up that extra bit later than usual removed some of potential fuss he would cause as he was more tired than usual. When he has asked for it we have completely ignored his request, which has worked a treat.

There hasn't been any tears or tantrums which i am personally amazed and overjoyed at. We thought that with Charlie also having and using a dummy it might have acted as a constant reminder but it really hasn't.

The only negative change in behaviour has been when his teeth are hurting when he feels the need to chew on something, he chews on his teddies ears( poor bunny!).

So whilst we have had a smooth ride every kid is different and different parents approach it in a different way. So i asked my good friends on Twitter to share with me their experiences of ditching the dummy, here is what they said....

So ladies and gents i would love to hear more of your thoughts and experiences so please do comment and share.
