My Family's Water Saving Pledge

Did you now that the average person uses 150 litres of water per day, that's four and a half wheelie bins full of water each week!

If households had water saving flushes, taps and shower-heads fitted as standard each person could save a third of the water they use each and every day. Less usage = cheaper bills!

In a bid to educate families on the benefits water saving measures, Yorkshire Water are asking families to make pledges to energy around their home. They want every household to get their hands a free money and water saving pack, a pack that jammed full of gadgets and advice on how each household can reduce water its consumption- they are delivered directly to your door and fit through your letter-box  Every-time someone orders a water saving pack, Yorkshire Water donate 10p to Water Aid, an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation.

What's in the the box?

Order a energy saving box and you will receive the following water saving gadgets;

Save-A-Flush
The save-a-flush bag is a clever little sod, as when it is installed it can save 1.2 litres every time you flush That's around 5,000 litres a year!

The bag is littered with instructions which helped make it super-easy for me to fully understand how and why i needed to use the product. All i needed to do was drop it into the tank away from any moving parts and it begins working almost instantly. You can use a hook to hold the bag in place if you're worried about the bag moving around when draining.

ShowerSave
The shower-save regulator restricts the flow of water to just 8 litres of hot water a minute.

The little device was again easy to install as it came with a simple step-by-step instructions on the packaging. All i had to do is unscrew the show the showers hose and fit/replace the existing regulator with the new more efficient one.

The only little surprise i had during the installation phase was that i didn't screw the hose back on correctly so when i next turned it on water sprayed all over the place.. so let my mistake be a warning to you!

Shower Timer - You are also given a handy little-timer that gives you 4 minutes warning. The idea is you have to spend one less minute in the shower each time and that alone could save up to £120 a year.

Tap Aerator Kit
The box also contains an energy saving aerate kit. The idea is to add the kit to your main household tap to reduce the flow of water and adding this can help save  up to 70% for every four minutes it is in use.

To be honest this was the most difficult device to install as it was unclear at first if the kit would fit my modern kitchen tap. In the end it transpired that the device wasn't big enough to fit on the tap so i had to but back on the old aerartor. I did then try the kit on the bathroom tap but again the kit didn't fit!

All-in-all the kit and the accompany booklet were easy to use and read, i am sure that even the most novice diy enthusiast could turn their hands to installing these widgets. The kit will go a little way to helping our family lower our daily water consumption (Which is fab for the local environment) and directly save us money off our annual water-bill.

After installing most of the kit around the house we then sat down to think about the best ways our family can cut our water consumption with the help of Yorkshire Waters pledge cards.

We pledge to...

1. only take four minutes or less in the shower
2. remember to use the dual flush function more
3. not leave the tap running when were brushing our teeth
4. full the dishwasher to capacity before washing!
