Babycentre.co.uk suggest that parents "can" stop using a baby monitor whenever they like. But turning the monitor off at night when your baby's around 6 months old, might actually help you get a better night's sleep — and help your baby develop healthy sleep habits.
To get a feel of when other parents gave up using their monitors i took to Twitter and these were the replies;
@TheYorkshireDad 1st child 18 months, 2nd child never used lol x

@TheYorkshireDad Ummm haven't. When my eldest turned 4 his younger brother was put in his room. I am worry about not being able to hear them

@TheYorkshireDad I never used one. Because of outside noise at old flat I left radio on in the bedroom - monitor meant listening to it!

@TheYorkshireDad Never bothered using them. Could always hear well enough.

@TheYorkshireDad Bagl is 3 at the end of March and we still use ours as we can't hear him otherwise, he doesn't think to shout for us.

@TheYorkshireDad Still using one at 13 months old and no plans to give up just yet!

@TheYorkshireDad I think it's worth it for the peace of mind. Eventually they'll be old enough to come get you, and then you won't need it

So from all the replies i think it would be best to keep the monitor turned on during the night until Ted is old enough to shout or come and get us should he need help.
