Our 5 year home renovation plans

We moved in to our second home over two years ago now and whilst we love our home and our neighbourhood we want a bigger house. We don’t want to move; we will simply renovate the house to accommodate our growing family. Here are some of the ways in which we plan to change our home in the next five years.

Garage on the side of the house

We don't have a garage on the side of our home, even though we do have the space. I would honestly love one to use as a mechanic’s space, workshop and somewhere i can invite the guys around for a game of poker now and then. I would love to have Tarkett Tilt granite flooring, blocking between studs to attach shelving that will be used to place workshop tools and a golfing themed war decor throughout. Nail blocking between the ceiling trusses to hang lights and attach bicycle hooks would be desirable.

Kitchen extension

We live in an older house that was designed with a very small kitchen and a different dining area. Since my family uses these spaces informally, I plan to extend the kitchen space and make it more open. This could provide an area that could be used for breakfast or simply relaxing as a family.

Since it is very expensive to replace the kitchen units, I will just paint the ones that we currently have and buy a door. I will extend the kitchen towards the garden and create an open space to allow interaction with family and friends. I will leave the worktop and sink area covered though. This way, the worktop and sink will be out of view.

Outdoor man-cave

A man cave is the perfect space to relax and hung out with my friends or work on my projects without intrusion. A log cabin should be pretty easy to construct too. Essentials of such a project include a solid foundation to allow for easy installation and ensuring the cabin stays for a long time. I’ll also need the logs, windows, doors, roof and floors. I’ll buy all these things as a package to make everything easier.

My friends and I will treat the foundation frame to prevent decay and floor joists. We will then start building the walls by adding the layers of timber. Since most timber houses come with window and door gaps, we will not have to make them. We’ll simply install the windows and doors. After that, we’ll fix the roof and add the floor boards.

Loft conversion for storage only

While the loft is ideal for use as a storage space, we can’t use ours for that purpose until we make some renovations. Before doing anything, I will get a professional to check if we can safely use the area to store heavy items. There’s really not much to do in the loft since we are only using it for storage. I’ll simply purchase a pull down ladder to make it easier to access the area and improve the floor.

Log fire in the living room

I plan to create a massive fire place since our living room is tall and big. A substantial hearth will help us achieve this while adding on its look. Since we’ll be using flagstone, we will not require a mantel. What we will definitely need is a place to mount our television.

I plan to complete all these renovations in five years. I am sure that everyone will be happy with the outcome, especially my wife. You know what they say: a happy wife is a happy life.
