6 Gardening Projects To See You Through Challenging Times #CP

Nobody wants to live in challenging times. But like it or not, the world occasionally goes through great turbulence. And that’s when regular people need to knuckle down and find projects to keep their minds active and lives meaningful.

So what better place to start than with the garden? For centuries, people have been using outdoor plots of land to create idyllic spaces that fill them with joy. It takes work, but it’s totally worth the effort.

Check out these gardening projects to see you through challenging times.

Create A Bug Hotel

Encouraging a diverse array of bugs in your garden is one of the best ways to keep it healthy and happy. Bugs eat other bugs, reducing the number of pests and helping to bring nature into balance.

The best way to encourage bugs into your garden is to create a bug hotel - a kind of DIY burrow for them that mimics the places where they would naturally create their homes and nests.

To make a bug hotel, collect bamboo shoots, twigs, pinecones, dried pieces of wheat or grass, and old bulbs. Then arrange them inside a shallow wooden box with an open lid to allow easy access. You should find that beetles, butterflies, ants and earwigs all soon set up residence in the hotel, nurturing their young.

Plant A Hedgerow

Hedgerows are a great way to encourage wildlife on your property and get more privacy. But they also work as a garden feature too.

Planting a row of Taxus Baccata not only shields your garden, but it also creates something that looks attractive and will last all winter.

Nurture Weak Plants Indoors

The winter can be tough on a lot of plants. Many don’t make it through.

It can be sad to see plants dying during the winter months, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Often, you can just bring them indoors, place them under a light, and they’ll begin to bloom again.

If you decide to go down the indoor growing route, you’ll need to programme the light timer to come on during daylight hours and switch off at night. You’ll also need to research the light intensity required by the species you rescue.

Grow More Succulents

Succulents are strange-looking plants but can be a lot of fun to grow. They’re different from the average set of plants you find in people’s gardens.

To grow them, you’ll need to become a bit of an expert on the subject. But once you get the hang of it, you can make them look great.

Plant Your Winter Crops

If you have a vegetable patch, you’ll want to use these short days to plant your winter crops - plants like onions and garlic that you’ll harvest in the spring.

Refresh Your Gardening Tool Set

Lastly, you’ll want to audit your gardening toolset to ensure that it is ready for the spring and summer months ahead.

Where possible, seek high-quality equipment that will be with you for many seasons.
