The things i thought i should know before i become a father :S

Before the baby arrives i thought i would get my head and take a quick look at what i need to know before it arrives. So from the deep dark pages of the internet these are the things every father should know before the big day!
Feeding the baby

This is a task that should be carried out on a regular basis and may not always be the easiest thing to achieve. It is always good to build a bond with the baby during feeding time, so talk to them and make them laugh, but do not get them too excited! When the baby stops breast feeding, it will almost certainly become the fathers role to help with feeding time. Babies from an early age will require pureed foods as they will find swallowing difficult. However, soft adult food such as macaroni cheese pasta and mashed foods such as potato can be introduced at around 10 to 12 months of age.

Changing nappies

Changing nappies is an element that every father needs to learn how to deal with. After time it can become easier, but one needs to be prepared to change the nappy at any point, as leaving a soiled nappy on a baby may result in nappy rash. The best way to change a nappy is by laying the baby on a towel or a changing mat on the floor. Take the nappy off and use it to wipe off any excess waste. A selection of spare nappies should be available. One should also have wet wipes or some cotton wool and warm water to clean the baby with. The baby should be cleaned well and girls should be cleaned from front to back. Any waste nappies should be wrapped up and stored in a plastic bag. These should be thrown away and should not be washed down the toilet.

Dealing with lack of sleep

A baby will have irregular sleep patterns for the first six weeks of their life, which will mean that the parents will need to get used to little or no sleep at times. The father may have to take responsible care of the child whilst the mum gets some rest. Short bursts of sleep or 'catnaps' of around ten minutes or more can always help and will refresh the mind. Young children continue to have irregular sleep patterns for the first several years of their life and may suffer from nightmares, the need for the toilet in the middle of the night and other late night activities.

Caring for objects and furniture in and around the house

When the baby learns to crawl, he or she will begin the adventure of life. They will be so keen to explore every area of the house and will investigate each object that they come across. For a baby, the way of examining an object is by putting in their mouth. A father must learn to put precious objects somewhere that the baby can't reach. On a mantle piece or stored away in a cupboard is usually the best option. Expensive equipment such as video players and high-fi equipment are also vulnerable, as the baby may choose to smear food on the machine, or draw on it with crayons. Furniture, household objects and wallpaper are all vulnerable to these activities, which is why one should not invest in new household items when a baby has entered the family and should protect their precious items by storing them away.
