How To Finally Clear Out Your Loft #CP

The loft is the most common clutter zone in UK homes. Many of us use it as a dumping ground for all the stuff we don’t know what to do with. As this clutter builds up, it can cause all kinds of problems from making it difficult to access certain items to encouraging pest problems.

Decluttering your loft could be a chance to turn this into an organised space. By getting rid of enough items, you may even be able to consider converting it into an additional bedroom or a home office.

Of course, decluttering an attic can be daunting. There’s a lot of stuff to sort through and some of it may be sentimental. Where do you start? This post offers some tips on how to finally clear out your loft.

Divide items into categories

The most effective way to tackle clutter is to start by categorising it. Consider sorting all your stuff into these four categories placing these items into different parts of your loft:

  • Keep: This is stuff that you need or has personal value. Make sure not everything ends up in this category - remember the goal is to declutter!

  • Sell: When it comes to possessions you don’t want or need, consider their value. Could you make some money from selling them?

  • Donate: Some items may not be worth enough to sell, but could still be useful to someone. These could be worth donating.

  • Bin: Items that are of no value to anyone else or that are broken can be disposed of in black bags. Be realistic about which items have value.

Value old and unusual items

It might be worth valuing old and unusual heirlooms or childhood toys online. You never know if one of them is quite rare and valuable. Check the likes of eBay to see if they’re worth anything. You don’t want to accidentally throw away or donate a £5000 antique!

Consider hiring a skip

Having to take items to the dump can be an extra chore. You could end up putting it off - and then instead of hoarding clutter you’ll be hoarding bin bags full of clutter. Hiring a skip allows you to get rid of items from your home immediately. The skip hire company can then take away the skip and dispose of your item for you. On top of this, having a skip outside may motivate you to throw away more stuff in order to make good use of it.

Take photos of sentimental objects

It’s hard to get rid of items that are of sentimental value. But ask yourself this: if it’s been in the loft all this time, do you really need to keep it? A more space-efficient way to preserve the memory of these items could be to take photographs of them and then create a photo album out of them. You may then feel more comfortable selling, donating or throwing them away knowing that you’ve still got a photograph of them to look at.

Go to a car boot sale

Not sure whether to sell or donate certain items? Why not consider taking them to a car boot sale? Provided that you advertise them for a low price, you’re likely to make a few sales. Whatever doesn’t sell can be donated.
