The Ultimate Guide To Renovating A Small Space | #CP

If you are keen to renovate a smaller space, whether this is an apartment, a home office or a poky bathroom, there are a number of strategies that you can employ to benefit your decor. Living in a small space can feel claustrophobic, but it doesn’t have to. Being in a smaller area can feel warm and cosy rather than stifling. Forget about hoarding all of those interior magazines and opt for some common sense decorating ideas instead. Read on to discover how you can renovate a small room and create the illusion of space.

Light

Most rooms, apart from your bathroom, should have a window. Even if you live in a tiny cottage and your living room is north facing, that tiny piece of glazing may be your only natural light source. It is up to you to maximise it. Put up a few mirrors to reflect and bounce around the natural light. Help to enhance your natural light by painting your walls white or cream. These lighter hues help to reflect the light rather than absorb it.

Forget about the strip lighting of old, and go for a softer hue. Install some LED spotlights in the ceiling instead of the larger hanging lights that encroach on your space. LED lights don’t have to be boring and can take the shape of achingly cool Edison style filament bulbs adding a vintage feel to your smaller space.

Fabrics

The furnishings that you use for your smaller space can make or break your room. Adding a range of fabrics can add interest to your space. Mix up the tactile nature of your room by adding a couple of fluffy rugs that feel warm and pleasant underfoot. Whip up some heavy drapes to block out the light in the evenings but that you can pull back during the day to let in the maximum amount of sunlight. You can also place throws, blankets and cushions in the room to adorn your furniture. Go for velvet textures, graphic prints, chenille and wool. The mixture of textures will make your room more unique and exciting to be in.

Walls

If your space is very small, don’t opt for the deep khaki green emulsion paint or the damson purple hue. No matter how much you like this colour scheme, you will end up feeling squashed in a dark and miserable space. Instead, you have to go for a more blank white canvas. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t add interesting art, photography or family photos to break up the space. You might even want to add a feature wall with some on trend vintage inspired wallpaper or some heavy damask prints. The walls of your room need to hold your interest. If you are renovating your bathroom, go for a floor to ceiling tile so that you aren’t cutting your wall in half with the upper section being paint. Tiles are shinier and will create a better illusion of space.

Renovating a small space can be difficult. You need to find nifty storage solutions and utilise all of the natural light you have access to. Follow this guide and your small space will look incredible.
