Autumn/Winter Car Care With Holts

With the clock going back an hour the kind the folks over at Holts have been kind enough to send me over a care package for my car. As the darker and harsher weather will soon be upon us it is important that we all run regular checks on our car to ensure they can cope with the demanding UK roads.

For those of you that don't know Holts are the experts in car care and maintenance offering products and services from top-of-the-range brands: Holts, Redex, Simoniz and Prestone. You probably have one of two products in your car our around the house already!

In the toolbox they sent some essentials for the colder months and some of the everyday essentials that everyone should carry in their vehicles at all times:
  • Emergency puncture repair kit - Tyreweld
  • De-Icer
  • Aircon Cleaner - Aircon odour bomb
  • Emergency foil blanket
  • A first aid kit
  • Car screen wipes
  • Screen Wash
  • Screenies Car Glass Wipes

The AA have a vault of knowledge around winter checks and they recommend that you run the following checks now that the nights have got colder and darker:

Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades.

Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.

Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.

Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure.

Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs.

Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight.

Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.

Screen Cleaning - It is important that before you begin your journey on a frosty morning that you clear your window-screen. To remove frost from your window consider using a scraper and de-icer.

First Aid Kit - anything can happen on the roads and you should always be ready for an emergency by carrying a basic first aid kit

Spare Tyre Checks - before making any long journey it is wise to check your spare tyre and or you have an emergency puncture repair kit.

I did try-out the aircon bomb and i have to say that i am rather impressed. First of all the instructions were easy to follow and all i had to do place the can in the car and wait ten minutes for it to fill the car. After venting the car-out for a good ten minutes the smell was a little over powering, but it was a nice smell that faded after a couple of days to reasonable level of smellyness. I would definitely use the aircon bomb once again.

A huge thanks to Holts for sending me on these products! Feel free to follow them on Twitter for the latest news, offers and updates:
