Open Farm Sunday at South Acre Farm near Melbourne

Sunday 8 June 2014 is Open Farm Sunday and South Acre Farm near Melbourne is opening its gates to visitors, for what promises to be both a fascinating and enjoyable day out for the whole family.  This annual nationwide event is organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) and along with South Acre Farm, hundreds of other farms across the country will be hosting events to showcase British farming. Open Farm Sunday is a great chance to find out at first hand how our food is grown and produced sustainably and talk to the farmers responsible.

Overview of event: South Acre Farm is a family run dairy farm producing over 2 million litres of high quality milk a year and we hope to show visitors how we do it on Open Farm Sunday. For us, cows are the most important part of our farm and we take great pride in caring for them. Well cared for cows benefit us both emotionally and financially, as a happy cow is easier and more enjoyable to manage as well as being more productive.

It’s not just all about the cows though, we will also have a variety of modern machinery and technology on display that is needed to run this farm and look after our cows.

Farmer Paul from South Acre Farm: “There is a lot to celebrate about British farming – so do come and join us on Open Farm Sunday and find out why! My family and I are really looking forward to welcoming everyone and showing them around our farm.

·         Meet our herd of dairy cows, see them being milked, tour their housing and pastures and learn how that milk is made.
·         During your visit to South Acre Farm you will discover how we produce quality milk through precision farming management and utilising the resources we have to maximise production.
·         There will be lots to see and do including guided farm tours, tractor and trailer rides, ‘meet the animals’ as well as refreshments and a display of some of the equipment and machinery we use on the farm.

Caroline Drummond, Chief Executive of LEAF said: “Open Farm Sunday is a great opportunity for everyone to get out into the countryside and visit a farm.  It is vital that we support our farmers and understand the work they do to produce quality food, sustainably, for us all to enjoy.  All types and sizes of farm are opening on the 8th June to tell the story behind our food and so much more. Visitors will get a fascinating insight into aspects of the countryside that they wouldn’t normally see.”

This year’s event will be the eighth Open Farm Sunday. For up-to-date campaign information and to let us know about your time on the farm, follow us on Twitter - twitter.com/openfarmsunday.
