Vax Cordless SlimVac Vacuum Cleaner: Test & Review

My theory on housework is, if the item doesn't multiply, smell, catch fire or block the Fridge door, let it be - Emma Bombeck

Living with two boys ages one and three means that our home is littered with toys and foods 95% of the time. Like many of you will already know, it is amazing how quickly a room can go from clean to bomb site when kids are let loose. We have now got to the stage in our lives where we don't tidy as we go anymore. We wait until the end of the day, when the boys are tucked up in their little beds to get stuck into the tidying, cleaning and washing. At times i find truly astonishing the places where we find food; from raisins in the toys box through to crumbs on in the drawers and even have eaten biscuits down the side of the sofa, little boys really are filthy!

Luckily for us the kind folks over at Vax have asked the family to put the Vax Cordless Slimvac Vaccum Cleaner TBTTV1B1 through to the test. I could think of know better time to put a hoover to the test than over Christmas and the Festive period!

The current family hoover has taken a battering over the years, it is a upright Dyson and we have had it for as long as i can remember. The hoover has seen better days and not only is it falling apart i felt like a good work-out every-time we had to hoover! So as you can imagine we were over joyed to hear that we get the opportunity to review a new hoover. My parents have always owned and trusted their Vax carpet cleaners!

The Vax Cordless SlimVac Vacuum Cleaner TBTTV1B1 retails for £109. As a cheaper alternative to the Dysons i was keen to get my hands on the product to see the quality of the product and more importantly it's power and reliability.

What's in the box?

So if you decide to splash the cash on Vax cordless hoover you want to know what you get for you money right? Inside the well branded and lightweight box you get following:

The Vacuum

  • A lightweight machine (2kg) with the option to between heads
  • A rinse-able filter
  • A 0.6 litre capacity
  • Wall-mount

Tools

With the hoover you get three interchangeable tools:
  • Crevice tools
  • Upholstery tools
  • Dusting brush

Other Items

  • The lithium battery and Charger: deliver up-to 24 minutes of cleaning, with the battery taking 5 hours to charge
  • A mode for hard floors and carpets
  • Power latch: just above the power trigger there is a latch which you can pull across to hold the on button in place, this allows for the hoover to run with you pressing the power button continuously, saving you much efforts!
  • Instructions: a easy to read instruction manual that helped me set-up the hoover within three minutes

So after a good charger and a test spin the first challenge was to get the hoover mount on the wall. I confess that the main appeal of the cordless hoover to me is that is can be stored away much easier, taking up as little space as possible.

The Wall-mount

To get the wall-mount on to the wall you are given to screws and wall plugs. It is simply a case of picking your spot and drilling the holes for your plugs and screws and fitting the mount with the screws. Vax even provide you with plastic caps to cover the screw holes so the mount look tidy and sharp. As you can see from the images below we located the Vax hoover under our stairs which is a little bit of a dumping ground.

We decided to place the hoover under the stairs as we needed access to a plug socket for the hoover to charge. We wanted to be able to plug it in to let it charge away from little hands so it made sense to store it in a difficult place to get into and reach!

As previously mentioned we wanted to put the hoover through its paces to see how it matches up against the hoovers we have had previously. Here are the results:

Challenge 1: Tidying up after the Christmas Tree

We only waited two days after Christmas Day to get the tree down, we needed the space and got sick of the kids playing with it. This year we scrooges and opted for a cheap plastic tree in the knowledge that the little ones would ruin it and a real tree would cause use a world of pain in the cleaning department. Even though we had a plastic tree there was a good amount of debris around the base from the boys messing around, as well as the plastic pine needles.

The hoover had no problem picking the needle from the Christmas tree and i would even go as far to say that it did my better at it than my old crappy Dyson! Check-out the Vax cordless in action, we even had the 18 month old helping/hindering the cleaning efforts:

Challenge 2: Cleaning Behind the Sofa

So one of the cleaning jobs we do every month is the cleaning behind and under the sofa. This is not the most fun jobs i can tell you, many of you with little ones will know, you find some strange things From food to forks, through to the lost remote and those toys out of that children's magazine you bought three weeks ago, cleaning in and around the sofa is a tough task.

Not only did we pull out the sofa to give it a clean, but we also removed the cushions. As you can see my Toddler loved having fun with the cushions and it was the first opportunity we had to test the Vax SlimVac in handheld mode.

The suction of the the hoover when it is handheld mode is very good, it was able to pick up the majority of the debris on the sofa. I had enough charge to hoover both behind the sofa and under the cushions, with chamber only becoming half full. Here is a little video of the cleaner in action:

Challenge 3: The Family Hair Cuts

My partner trained as a hairdresser straight-out of school and moved into accounting after a couple of years in the trade, which comes in very handy for us as we get free hair-cuts. Luckily for the review it was hair-cut time for the toddler, baby and me as had started to all form mullets! Cutting children's hair can be difficult and there is no better way to keep the still and quiet than giving them the their favourite show to watch of the tablet.

When cutting hair in our kitchen we usually do use a brush to sweep it-up and very rarely the hoover, but this time around we wanted to see how the hoover would cope sucking up clumps and loose strands of hair off lino. We hoovered after each cut as no hoover in the world can cope hoovering up thick mounds of hair.

As you will see from the short video clip below the hoover glided and effortlessly picked up the hair. One of the best features came in handy for this test, the dynamic rotational head made it even easy to maneuver the hoover to sections of the floor where masses of hair were standing.

The Verdict

Compared to some of the cordless Dysons the only disadvantage the Vax Cordless has is the wall-mount doesn't have an in built charger. For me that isn't a bid deal, i don't mind having to use the charger and i personally think that you are paying an extra one hundred pound with a Dyson cordless for the privilege of having a wall mounted charger... is that really worth the money?

To give my honest opinion of the Vax cordless slimVac hoover i couldn't  fault the machine when using it. It is nimble, reliable, affordable, durable and most important easy to use, this hoover would be a welcome and much used addition to any household with a young family. I found the dynamic head to be one of its best features and as i switched between carpet and hard floor, i felt that it performed just as well on carpet than it did on the hard floor. Now that we have ditched our Dyson and have a lightweight cordless vacuum we are hoovering more often due the fact the cordless hoover is so easy to access and use.

If you are looking to buy the hoover you can buy directly from Vax, Argos, Currys and Amazon to name a few!
