From the Potty to The Toilet: The Tale of the Lazy Toddler

So back in July we decided to take the plunge and get our two year old out of his nappies and into big boy pants. You might remember a post i had written back in July in which i discussed how we were using Netflix's five minute episodes to help the whole process.

In summary, it wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be, i had heard some horrific stories around finger painting and poo on walls. Especially when you consider the fact that my son has had problems pooing ever since he was born, which has meant that has had to take medication every day to ensure he has a steady and painless cycle. Even with the constipation medications we Luckily we managed to avoid any finger painting incident!

As my toddler neared to his third Birthday we decided that it was time for the fairies to take the potty away, as we felt he was able to visit the toilet unaided without any problems, which occasionally he was doing already anyway. We had purchased him a little step and a baby training seat when we got him the potty in an attempt to help him stop him falling down the loo. So with all of that gear and no potty he instantly took it to at first, i guess he relished the freedom and responsibility.

He often uses his trips to the loo to harboring toys he doesn't want his little brother to play with! So weeks have moved on and all is good until recently..... after hitting three he has started to have more accidents in his pants. Whilst we don't mind and understand that this can occasionally happen we have come to the conclusion that he can't be bothered to go to toilet in fear that he is missing out on something.

Not wanting to miss out on the fun, miss the actions packed scenes in Paw Patrol and or let his brother get hold of any of this toys, the toddler will now move in to one of the corners of the room and go silent. We now know that this is his little trick so we instantly ask him he would like to go when we see him go silent.

We did think that he was sacred to go to the loo by himself for a little bit, but we always leave the light on for him and he is the one that always wants to close the door so no one can see what he is up to. We are convinced this is just a phase and he will move out of it.

The next milestone is taking him out of his night time pull-ups and whilst we are in no rush to do so i think he is ready. How do i know? Well i have forgotten to put a nappy on a couple of time recently and he has made it half way through the night without wetting himself. He always wakes up on a night for a trip to the toilet anyway which is good. So in the New Year expect to see tweets about wet beds and increased night-time loo runs!

Great blog. I'm just noticing you have a carpeted living room and I'm wondering how you coped with accidents on carpeted flooring. I am just thinking about starting potty training but terrified of having wees on the carpet and how to clean them up!
